Introduction

Electrical installations are used in industries, shopping malls, offices as well as domestic premises, etc. They are subject to compliance with the Electricity Act etc. relevant Regulations and Code of Practice, inter alia. It is vital that practitioners, operators, and owners of these installations, especially those willing to be a LEW, have the necessary knowledge of the laws and design principles of the installations so that appropriate preventive measures can be instituted at the design stage to avoid future unnecessary electrical accidents. The purpose of this course is to provide, strengthen, and deepen them with the understanding of the regulatory requirements and installation design principles, etc to prepare for the LEW competency framework.

Objective: This two-day course covers 2 parts: Part 1 on day 1, covers the laws and regulatory requirements, LEW framework and requirements, SP application procedures, testing methods, etc while Part 2 on day 2 deals with the design principles and compliance of electrical installations, salient points of SS638, SS650 (Part1&2), installation non-compliance.  There will be breaks between sessions, allow Q and A, Continuous assessment in the form of random quizzes, activities to re-call and re-instate what has been taught in class will be carried out to enhance the learning process e.g., reflective practices and social learning, etc.

 Who Should Attend

This course is suitable for all practitioners who are electricians, electrical technicians, engineers, technical executives, supervisors, etc., dealing with electrical installation design, construction, operation, and maintenance work, etc, to prepare for LEW competency.

The course is also good for the company management, safety practitioners, and owners of the electrical installations, Contractors, etc. to attend and understand the regulatory requirements as well as the design principles and take appropriate action to enhance the safety management of the installations. This course is mostly suitable for practitioners who wish to apply for LEW licenses or upgrade their existing LEW licenses, to learn about or refresh their knowledge of LEW’s roles, procedures, duties and responsibilities, the laws, and electrical installation design & principles. 

What Participants Will Learn: This course is crafted to apply the design principles, and familiarise, and understand compliance in electrical installations under the current regulatory framework to enhance the installations’ capability and operation confidence level. Most importantly, at the end of this course, participants will gain confidence and acquire the necessary knowledge in practical applications to prepare for LEW competency.

Part 1 - Day 1

  • Introduction of LEW framework and regulatory requirements
  • Interpretation of the Electricity Act and relevant Regulations
  • PTW procedures and regulatory requirements
  • Roles and responsibilities of LEW and Licensee
  • Testing and inspections
  • Installation testing methods and sequence of testing (SS638)
  • Essentials of Single Lind Diagram (SLD) 
  • Licensing of electrical and supply installations
  • SP application procedures


Part 2 – Day 2

  • Introduction of Electrical installation,
  • Scope, Object, and fundamental principles of SS638 & SS650
  • Protection for safety, Selection, and Erection of Equipment
  • Special Installations, Locations containing a bath/shower.
  • Earthing system, Earthing, and Protective conductors
  • Electrical supply for a construction site, Generator connections, etc
  • Socket-outlets assembly (SOA)
  • Installation Non-Compliance
